School Survival Skills For students entering Grades 4-6
This program introduces how to use different school resources for strengthening academic and study skills. Students will use dictionaries, thesauruses, and other nonfiction tools for locating information easily and learning basic study skills to help them survive the daily challenges of school.

Pre– Readers For students entering Grades Pre K-K
This program is designed for the student entering pre kindergarten or kindergarten who is not yet reading. The Pre- Reader students will work on identifying letters with corresponding sounds, writing letters and words with proper formation, and reading simple text with patterns, students will meet one hour per week.

Beginner Readers For students entering Grades K-1
This program is for the beginner reader. The Beginning Reader students will work on identifying word families and letter blends, decoding skills, learning sight words, and building beginning comprehension skills.
Grades K-1: Tuesdays 5:20pm - 6:20pm or *Wednesdays 4:00pm - 5:00pm

Beginner Readers Course Outline

Emergent Readers For students entering Grades 1-2
This program is for students who have mastered letter sounds and word families. Emergent readers will work to advance their oral and written fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension. Students will meet once a week for 1 hour. Classes are differentiated by reading levels (R.L)
Grades 1-2: R.L. 4-9: Tuesdays 4:00pm - 5:00pm
Grades 1-2: R.L. 10-16: Mondays 4:00pm - 5:00pm
Grades 1-2: R.L. 10-16: *Wednesdays 5:20pm - 6:20pm

Reading Strategy Session (Grades 2-6)
This program is designed for students who want to strengthen their reading skills over the summer by reading great books! Students will become active readers by using reading strategies that will help them become better readers in all subjects.

Ace Your Answer For students entering Grades 2-6
Finally a class devoted to developing the perfect written response to reading comprehension questions. Students in this class will read short texts and learn to pull evidence from the text to support their written responses. (for students in grades 2-6)

Basics of Writing For students entering Grades 3-5
This class is designed for students who need support in getting their ideas on paper. Students will examine and practice the stages of the writing process including: organizing ideas, drafting a cohesive paragraph(s), editing and revising the draft, and publishing a final copy.

Handwriting Without Tears® Printing For students entering Grades 1-3
Sum It Up is pleased to offer this program to those frustrated by handwriting. This class incorporates parts of the Handwriting Without Tears program which offers techniques for making handwriting more legible and easier for the writer through the use of music, art and fun! (for students in grades 1-3)

3 P's of Writing For students entering Grades 4-6
This class focuses on writing for the 3 major purposes: to pursuade, to inform, and for personal expression. Students will learn tools for effective writing and apply these writing techniques. (for students in grades 4-6)

For students entering Grades 4-5
This program integrates reading, writing, math and science skills on a weekly basis. Students will research a topic, formulate predictions, conduct scientific investigations, write conclusions and analyze data on a variety of high interest topics.
