Strategy Sessions Course Outline (Grades 5-6)

Grades 5-6: Thursdays 5:20pm - 6:20pm
  • As a weekly homework assignment, students will be asked to practice reading strategies that are learned throughout the lessons.
  • NOTE:  Please be advised that course content, order and/or pacing may change at any time, based on the needs of the students.

Session A:

Week 1

  • Using active reading strategies including:
    • Making predictions
    • Changing predictions
    • Confirming/disproving predictions
    • Asking questions
    • Rereading to clarify
  • Constructing a written response

Week 2

  • Review active reading strategies
  • Using visualization
  • Constructing a written response

Week 3

  • Review active reading strategies
  • Writing a summary

Week 4

  • Review active reading strategies
  • Using the SQ3R strategy of taking notes
  • Using text features to locate information
Session B:

Week 5

  • Using active reading strategies including:
    • Making predictions
    • Changing predictions
    • Confirming/disproving predictions
    • Asking questions
    • Rereading to clarify
  • Constructing a written response

Week 6

  • Review active reading strategies
  • Identifying the important message
  • Constructing a written response

Week 7

  • Using text features to locate information
  • Making comparisons
  • Constructing a written response

Week 8

  • Using text features to help you locate information
  • Constructing a written response

**All course content is taught using age appropriate chapter books that students will read both in class and for homework.
